I'm trying to sort out how to claim the EV tax credit for my 2023 Fiat 500e. Bought it back in April last year and I’m pretty sure I’m in the clear for the credit. But, I’m totally lost on whether the dealer’s supposed to deal with any IRS stuff or if it’s all on me. Anyone been through this before or got any pointers? Thanks a bunch!

Last year when I grabbed my car, the dealership was pretty helpful with the paperwork, but you could tell they were a bit grumpy about it since it wasn’t really doing them any favors. They needed to share their tax ID and my SSN, which felt a bit nosy. Even though the whole thing was a bit of a hassle, the credit - up to 30% of the car's price, or a max of $4,000 - was a huge part of why I went for a used EV.

You’ll need to claim the EV tax credit yourself when filing taxes, dealers typically don’t handle that. Just make sure to keep your purchase paperwork and fill out IRS Form 8936.
