Gearing up for a road trip with a new set of tires for my trusty 2013 500e. Used 205/40 R17s on the stock suspension for a few seasons, but wondering if there are any "EV-specific" tires out there in that size. Haven't had much luck searching. The new 2024 500e uses 205/45 R17s - would those work on my car? Also open to non-EV tires that are close matches if EV options are scarce. Any recommendations for EV-friendly tires or solid look-alikes, anyone?

The 205/45 tires would fit, but they could rub on your liners when you turn sharply.

EV-specific tires don't always make a huge difference in my opinion. Instead, I'd recommend focusing on finding high-quality, affordable tires that are the recommended size for your car. Those will give you the best performance.

What did you get? For your 2013 500e, EV-specific tires in 205/40 R17 are rare, but I'd recommend options like Michelin Energy Saver or Bridgestone Ecopia work well. The 205/45 R17 size might fit, but check for clearance and handling differences.

These tires are way bigger than the ones that came with the car. They should fit, but might rub a little when you turn the wheel all the way, especially if you're driving fast.

Bigger tires make it harder to speed up and slow down. And those "EV tires"? They don't really save you much range, if any.

Also, your speedometer and odometer will be off because of the bigger tires. It'll show you're going slower and driving shorter distances than you actually are.

I replaced the stock tires on my car, which had poor dry grip, with Hankook Ventus V2 Concept 2 tires. The Hankooks significantly improved handling in dry conditions. In wet conditions, they gripped as well as the stock tires did in dry weather – a big improvement! I didn't test them in the snow, though.

Unfortunately, the Hankooks wore out quickly. I recently upgraded to more expensive Continental tires, which offer excellent wet grip, similar to the Hankooks in dry conditions. However, they're summer tires, so no snow driving for me!

What kind of road conditions will you be encountring on your road trip? I've been wondering about the impact of road conditions on tire choice. Tire Rack is a great resource for tire information and reviews. You can filter by size and vehicle type, and they often have user reviews that mention EV compatiblity. I've learned that online tire resources are invaluable.
